There are over 400 species of birds in Northern Ontario, from the majestic Golden Eagle to the tiny hummingbird. Due to the abundance of lakes and marshes in this region, many aquatic birds such as herons, cranes, egrets, ducks, geese and terns thrive here. Spiritually, the heron represents stillness and tranquility.

There are 7 primary clans (doodems) of the Anishinaabe people; loon (maang), crane (ajijaak), fish (gigoohn), bird (bineshiinh), bear (makwa), marten (waabizheshi) and deer (waawaashkeshi).

Each clan has its own roles and responsibilities that contribute the overall wellbeing of the nation.
