The Anishinaabe base their system of kinship on patrilineal clans (doodem). The clans, mainly based on animals were and still are an important part of Anishinaabe culture and identity.

The Bird (bineshiinh) clan is responsible for communication.

Traditionally they were responsible for facilitating all domestic issues and were often in charge of the community’s own council fires.
